Ecosystems In Water (7)

Image
There are a lot of water bodies located in and around Pakistan. The presence of the Indus and its tributaries as well the Arabian Sea helps marine life flourish and bloom. Location: The Indus River and its Tributaries, the Arabian Sea, as well as ponds, streams and lands created by glacial melt and rainwater runoff.  Features: The water is warm in the South and cold in the North. Algal as well as coral bloom is not too much due to water pollution. The variety of fish accounts for the advanced fisheries industry. Flora and Fauna: A few coral beds are present in freshwater streams and lakes such as lake Saif-Al-Malook. Algal bloom is prominent on beaches due to pollution. Coral is often seen washed up on the shore. Sea Urchins, Shrimp, Pawns, Squid and Crab live in the water, while an absolutely enormous amount of fish are present in the water. The mugger gharial crocodiles are also present in the Indus river, along with the Indus river dolphins. Stingrays and sharks have also been spo

Forests (6)

Image
Forests make up less than 5% of all the land on Pakistan. They aren't really common, but the tropical and semi-arid climate allows the forests to contribute a lot to the biodiversity of the country. Locations: Forests are present in the area between Sindh and Balochistan, Western Balochistan, Central and Northern Punjab, and well as a large area of KPK and FATA. Features: The forests are hot and humid with plenty of rainfall and vegetation. The food chain is active a lot over there. Flora and Fauna: A mixture of tropical, deciduous and coniferous trees are present in the forests of Pakistan, depending on the climate and altitude. Oak, birch, willow, chestnut, evergreen, etc... trees are present in large quantities while a variety of animals such as wild cats, foxes and monkeys reside in them too. Hummingbirds, parrots and hawks as well as owls make nests in the tall trees while deer and cattle rely on the plants to survive. Snow leopards and bears also take shelter in the forests

Plains (5)

Image
Plains make about 40% of the total land in Pakistan and are very common. They are the most populated landform and are the hub of activity. They are the simplest biome. Location:  The Plains of Pakistan include the coastal area, upper and lower Indus plain, the Balochistan Plateau, the Salt Range, and the Pothohar plateau. The Indus, Kharan, and Makran basins also count as plains. The plains have different altitudes and temperatures, with plateaus acting as elevations.  Features: The plains of Pakistan are the most suitable landform for living. They include savannahs, wetlands, steppes, etc. and contribute a lot to biodiversity.  Flora and Fauna: Plains have a variety of plants, including both conifers, tropical, and deciduous trees of all sorts which are home to lots of birds, ranging from crows to parrots. Grass, weeds, bushes, and shrubs are extremely common. Peacocks and ostriches prefer living in drier plains while the Indian Rhinoceros, Blue Bulls and Musk Deer prefer living in

Northern Areas (Alpine and Tundra Biomes) (4)

Image
The northern areas of Pakistan contain Alpine and Tundra biomes, both of which are very cold.  They make up 8% of all the land in Pakistan. Location:  They are present in mountainous regions such as Chitral, Hunza, Muzaffarabad, Skardu, Kashmir, etc.  Located in Northern Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan, as well as Kashmir, global warming has caused their area to shrink. They are located on elevated land. Features:    Alpine biomes are extremely high and are located at the maximum height of the treetops. Despite extreme cold and dryness, a variety of species survive there. Tundra biomes include mainly mountains and hilltops  (Karakoram, Himalayas, etc...) and don't have to be as high as alpine biomes. They are more or less the same, cold regions. Flora and Fauna: At such high altitudes, permafrost prevents the growth of trees. Only small shrubs, weeds and mosses are able to grow and survive in the cold weather. However, Markhors, Ibexes, and Musk Deer are found in

Ways to Save Pakistan's Biodiversity (9)

Image
But there is still hope. There is some time left to make an impact and to ensure the wildlife biodiversity of Pakistan grows and flourishes even more. All the consequences and negative impacts can be halted, but only if we act vigilantly and take some serious measures. Some of the most easy yet effective ways to save Pakistan's biodiversity can be: Giving Significant Locations The 'National Park' Status: National Parks are specially allotted areas dedicated to the conservation and habitation of the wildlife of a particular country. Natural parks don't have to be really big and decorated, but the name itself provides a special protocol to the place. Giving widely populated biomes the status of a 'National Park' will help increase its security in such a way that hunters will be terrified to enter land specifically owned by a strict government., and thus sanctuaries and breeding centers for vulnerable animals can be provided. Also, reserves and medical centers can

Threats to Wildlife Biodiversity in Pakistan (8)

Image
Since the past couple of decades, the biodiversity of Pakistan is facing severe threats by climate change, illegal hunting/poaching, and other disastrous human activities including all 5 forms of pollution. These threats have started to arouse fear in the majority of people that our country's biodiversity may get wiped out. Such threats are a lot in number, but a few of them put nature at great risk. They are listed and described in detail below. Illegal Hunting/Poaching/Fishing: Illegal hunting is extremely common in Pakistan. In the wetlands and savannahs of Pakistan, hunting is a popular sport carried out by the rich. Special birds such as Chukors, Whistling Ducks and Kites are shot in large numbers, and the hunters don't give a thought about their sport's impact on the environment. As a result, the food chain is disturbed and thus insects such as locusts are rising. The so called 'game birds' ' populations are rapidly declining, and many migratory birds also

Deserts (3)

Image
Desert biomes are prominent in Pakistan, where they make up 68% of the total area. Despite their seemingly unsuitable conditions, they actually contribute a lot to the biodiversity of Pakistan with their large collection of flora and fauna. Unfortunately, they are rapidly expanding due to global warming, which isn't beneficial for us. Location: Desert biomes are located mainly in Sindh, Balochistan and Southern Punjab where the temperatures as well as humidity are high and the land is flat. They are usually found in areas with less vegetation and rainfall. They are expanding nowadays into the plateaus of Punjab. A few popular deserts include Thar, Cholistan, Thar, and Kharan deserts. Features: These deserts are mostly semi-arid which favors biodiversity. Also, the unique weather and soil is comparatively more efficient for housing vegetation. Temperatures may reach 50' C in Summers. The presence of oasis and other clearings helps nomads settle there. Flora and Fauna: Desert b

A Large Collection of Biomes (2)

Image
Pakistan has a variety of biomes.   Biomes are special places housing specific species of flora and fauna.   The biomes are scattered all around the country, and depend completely on the climatic conditions and the altitude of the region they are located in. Pakistan is home to several unique biomes which in turn house about 82% of the country's biodiversity. They are present all around the map. The different altitudes of Pakistan's landscapes and a variety of climates help enrich the biodiversity. Given below are some popular biomes located in Pakistan, as well as some information regarding them:

A Diverse Country (1)

Image
Our beloved homeland, Pakistan, has been blessed with a lot of special features. Ranging from different climates, a number of seasons, and unique landforms to a wide variety of ecosystems, there is no natural sector in which Pakistan is left behind. All these features are included in the Biodiversity of Pakistan , which has a lot of variety and uniqueness. The biodiversity of Pakistan, whether it is of the deserts, mountains, or plains, never fails to surprise tourists who have started arriving here in large numbers. But urbanization and exploitation of natural resources may lead our nation's biodiversity to an inevitable decline which will be difficult to reverse. This blog aims to spread awareness, whilst enlightening readers regarding the wildlife biodiversity  present in Pakistan. Read on for more information!
